Intrauterine Infections
There are a lot of forms of intrauterine infections that could result in a baby being born with a hearing mutilation. Infections in babies are acquired from the mother's birth canal during labor and also transmitted through the placenta during pregnancy. Women can decrease the risk of infection during pregnancy by following these procedures:
- Your children must be completely immunized.
- You must know your rubella immune status before trying to conceive and particularly through pregnancy.
While pregnant, you should:
- Always wash your hands after changing diapers or handling any body emissions.
- Always wash your hands before and after handling food.
- Always avoid eating undercooked meats.
- Always remember that do not try to kiss your children on the mouth.
- Always remember that do not share crockery or toothbrushes with your children.
Always remember that the most unsafe time for women and their fetuses is the first trimester of pregnancy. A disease in the mother may be hard to identify because she may only have inconsequential symptoms. Always remember that if the mother is contaminated then it does not mean that the baby will be affected. Babies are only affected when assured infections are occurred at particular stages of pregnancy.
Always remember that the mother's can defend themselves and their babies from intrauterine infections by getting immunized for rubella during infancy and before pregnancy. There are many forms of intrauterine infections like syphilis which is treated with penicillin. You must keep in mind that the effects of a congenitally acquired infection can be sterner than the effects of the same infection if it is acquired in the normal manner. A child who gets rubella may only experience a meek fever and tickly hives while congenital rubella can sometimes escort to a baby being born with deafness, cataracts, heart defects and other problems. Always keep in mind that if a baby shows anomalous signs then they must be tested for one or more congenital infections. A baby's symptoms could include an anomalous appearance, eye abnormalities, seizures, small size, a big or small head, cardiac mutter, engorged abdominal organs, jaundice, skin rashes, petechiae, etc. |
